Rameses the Great built the Temple of Hathor beside the Great Temple at Abu Simbel .  

The temples were both cut out of the cliffs, at adjoining sites.  The colossal statues fronting the Hathor temple are of Rameses and his queen, Queen Nefertari.  

The presentation of any figure in the same scale beside a Pharaoh was rare, and thus Rameses greatly honored Nefertari.  

The David Roberts watercolor, below, shows the two temples as they were in the 1840's.
